PSA Delegate Workshops

 

All PSA delegates are strongly encouraged to attend the PSA’s development programme. It has been designed to give you the basic skills and information you need to be an effective delegate.

The programme includes a two-day introductory workshop, three one-day workshops, and three half-day workshops. Paid leave to attend is available through EREL

Workshop 1: Building Your Union

2-day workshop

This is the introductory workshop to give delegates confidence, knowledge and skills around union organisation and engagement:

  • collectivity, democracy, decision-making and unions
  • PSA partnership strategy
  • roles and relationships in the union and the workplace.

Workshop 2: Problem Solving

Half-day workshop 

Gain a practical skill to assist in solving the problems you encounter as a delegate:

  • problem-solving approaches and processes.

Workshop 3: Employment Legislation

Half-day workshop

Explore employment-related legislation and the impact on unions and workers’ rights:

  • employment law
  • employment agreements
  • good faith in employment relations.

Workshop 4:  Disciplinary Issues

1-day workshop

This course offers processes and techniques for supporting members who are facing disciplinary meetings at work.

Workshop 5: What Did You Say?

1-day workshop

This course provides delegates with skills related to:

  • facilitation of meetings
  • communication skills
  • dealing with disagreements
  • working with conflict
  • recording and reporting

Workshop 6: Bicultural Unionism

1-day workshop 

Develops an understanding of organising in a bicultural context:

  • your cultural background
  • applying the Treaty of Waitangi at work
  • case studies

Workshop 7: Creating a Positive Workplace: dealing with bullying

Half-day workshop 

This course provides delegates with an opportunity to:

  • identify what a safe and healthy workplace would look like
  • identify key elements of bullying and harassment
  • learn how to deal with bullying and harassment issues and practice doing so
  • know what legislation applies and when and where a policy applies
  • identify appropriate communication choices and practice making those choices
  • identify workers' and managers' rights and responsibilities in relation to creating a healthy and positive workplace.

To register for a workshop

You will need to complete a separate registration form for each workshop you sign up to.


Who can register?

  • PSA delegates.
  • PSA members interested in becoming a delegate are invited to the workshop Building Your Union.
  • Elected health and safety representatives are invited to the workshop Building Your Union.

Which workshop?

If this is your first PSA delegate workshop, please register for the introductory workshop, Building Your Union.

 

If you have already attended the Building Your Union workshop, then you are welcome to register for any of our other workshops.


Approval to attend 

Acceptance of your registration must be gained from the PSA and then from your manager before attendance can be confirmed.


Confirmation

The PSA will write to you to formally confirm your place on the workshop. You can only attend once you have received approval from your Manager. This is to ensure the legal requirements under EREL are met.


Your collective agreement & delegate handbook

Please bring a copy of your collective agreement & delegate handbook to each workshop.
