Fairness at work

Economies that work need fairness at work.

Higher wages help families make ends meet, and keep New Zealand’s economy strong.  In the 1990s, New Zealand’s wage gap with Australia grew thanks to laws like the Employments Contracts Act.  Weakening workers’ rights won’t close the gap, but further increases to minimum wages can.

Improving fairness at work helps families, too.  From paid parental leave to longer annual leave, helping families in today’s hectic world makes workers more productive and Kiwi society work.  Continuing to close the gender pay gap—more than 17%—is an important way to extend equality to women workers.  And going back to low-wage youth rates won’t help young families get a start.

The PSA is working with the Council of Trade Unions and other unions to put workers’ rights on the election agenda.  In a modern economy, an active relationship with unions based on common interest works around the world.  Society benefits from living wages, and innovative worker-friendly policies to help families.
