Have your say on Local Govenment changes

Big changes are coming in local government with water privatisation and possible cuts to valuable services which will affect everyone. We’ve sent PSA members who work in local government a survey to find out how they might be hit by the changes.  As well, we’d like to know what you think about your local council services as a resident or ratepayer. Please fill in these few short questions here.

Budget delivers little for public sector

"The Budget does nothing to improve the prospects for public service workers or the services they deliver.  We saw more than 1500 public sector jobs disappear last year, with more forecast to go this year and in years to come.  And all this in an improving economic environment." says  PSA National Secretary Brenda Pilott, who gave two addresses on the Budget. Public sector restructuring on the cards

Before the General Election, Prime Minister John Key said there would be no radical reorganisation of the public sector. Now he is saying that there are too many government agencies and restructuring  is needed to cut costs. The PSA argues that mergers and restructurings are complex and expensive and won't necessarily result in savings. On Radio New Zealand's Morning Report, PSA National Secretary Brenda Pilott said there needed to be more transparency about any restructuring and more consultation with those who work in the sector. Listen to the interview here.

Support the Redundancy Protection Bill

The recession may be officially over, but unemployment is still rising. MP Darien Fenton's Redundancy Protection Bill aims to provide basic redundancy protection for the estimated 80% of New Zealanders who don't have redundancy protections written into their employment agreement. Under the bill, workers would have to be given four weeks notice, and compensation of up to 26 weeks wages depending on how they had been with their employer.
