Public sector job watch

Public sector jobs are at risk. The Government has announced a cap on public service jobs. The reality is jobs are being cut not capped in the public sector.

The PSA estimates that so far around 2000 jobs are being cut in the public sector through positions being axed and through a sinking lid policy in which staff that leave are not being replaced. There will be more job losses as a rolling maul of restructuring and budget reviews is sweeping through the public sector.

Those who manage to keep their jobs may find their already heavy workloads increasing. In the 1990s National governments cut more than 20,000 public service jobs. (see graph).

The PSA is determined this won’t happen again. Now more that ever we need a strong public sector to cope with the fallout from the recession. We need your help to monitor jobs cuts in the public sector and the impact this having on your workload and on the services you provide sector so we can keep the public informed .
