Kevin Thompson
Sector Māngai - Christchurch City Council
I am currently Building Controls Officer (Nat Dip.Building Surveying) having first joined Christchurch City Council CCC in 2013 as a Building Inspector (4 years) transitioning to dual competency Building Consents Officer (2 years).
I have been a PSA Delegate since 2016. Having completed Advanced Delegate training, I am currently overviewing council wide membership data analysis to enable closer delegate / membership relationships.
Part of this is strategy is to collate and enable a voice for Māori members and grow the capacity of a Māori and culturally diverse PSA membership.
Maintaining a just and fair working life for fellow PSA members is a passion of mine while representing work colleagues both PSA members and (in some cases non-PSA members) in cases of:
- Unpaid overtime – 2016 presented a major issue with unpaid overtime resulting in an overhaul of time coding and management systems
- Restructure – 2018 along with fellow delegates supported PSA members (and some non-PSA members) during a very difficult internal transition involving disestablishment of roles with the outcome being no loss of jobs for members
- Other work-related challenges and advising work colleagues of rights and procedures to follow
I have also been a part of the 2018 bargaining team and was heavily involved in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and elements of Nga Kaupapa into the Christchurch City Council collective agreement. Prior to this there was very little kaupapa Māori content in past collective agreements.
I am also very active within the Otautahi Delegate Leaders Group in evolving a more kind and compassionate workplace strategy (as result of March 15, 2019 event).
