Member Q&A - Sarah-Jane Cuthers
Each month we talk to a PSA Youth member and find out about their work and passions.
If you want to be involved in this feature let us know at email@example.com
This month we talk to Sarah-Jane Cuthers, a claims manager for ACC in Dunedin.
What were you initial thoughts on signing up to do this Q&A?
Oh dear lord what have I done?
What is your job and what do you do on an average day at work?
I work in the Elective Surgery Unit at ACC, so if you break a leg while "riding bike with eyes closed" (please DO NOT do that!) our team would determine whether you were eligible for ACC surgical funding.
This is based on clinical and medical information, Clinical Advisor input as well as adhering to Legislation and ACC Policy.
What was a highlight at work for you in the past month?
Christmas work-do with the team! Still perplexed/damaged as to why the boss wore see through pants (maybe that should be a lowlight).
What would you say is the hardest thing about your job?
Declining surgery for someone who is genuinely suffering, they can't afford private healthcare and they don't understand the legislation.
Taking the time to chat, listen and help them understand can also be the most rewarding however.
What brought you to join the PSA and the PSA Youth network?
A very persistent delegate and sheer splendid luck to be honest!
Name the things you like about the PSA Youth network:
The intelligence and the passion, the brains and the beauty! I like that the PSAY are so accepting and encouraging no matter what your political/social views (especially as I get confused easily haha ! ) I like the inspiration and motivation to move forward to a better future. I like that we are all united.
What is your vision for youth in the PSA?
I would like to see more youth involved in the PSAY simply because of the true awesomeness of what I have experienced so far. I would like to see more youth aware of their Rights and having the confidence to exercise them…the importance of VOTING for example! (The "green dot" team know what I'm waffling about....)
How about when you aren't at work? What else do you like to do with your time?
Lots of love and lots of laughter!
What are your three loves?
Beer, hugs and meat (in that order).
What are your three pet peeves?
Bitchiness. Racism. General assholey-ness.
What advice would you give your 18year old self?
I know it seems impossible now but one day you'll get there... you'll make it... you WILL be a "Rock Off" champion!!
Anything else you would like to add?
I’m sorry that you will never get the minutes of your life back after reading this!!
Merry Christmas, happy holidays and safe travels to you all!!!
