What were you initial thoughts on signing up to do this Q&A?
A little nervous, but happy to maybe show a different area of work that not many people might not know about
What is your job and what do you do on an average day at work?
A Meat Inspector at AsureQuality. Well its always a early start 620am but we basically examine meat to be consumed by humans to guarantee their flesh and organs are free of disease, harmful bacteria and other contaminants and fit for human consumption. Anything deemed not suitable is downgraded to pet food. this is done through incising specifics lymph-nodes and areas on a carcasses well. Alot of communication between the onsite vet and company supervisors We have ALOT of checks to make sure we are compliant and ensuring our export licence is safe! ( I hope this makes sense)
What was a highlight at work for you in the past month?
We had a few meat inspectors come to help us out from other plants and getting to know them and discuss different ways they do things was enlightening
What would you say is the hardest thing about your job?
The hours, When we are really busy we might work some crazy hours 50-55 hours, and some people really dont understand our job or just assume its all blood and guts
What brought you to join the PSA and the PSA Youth network?
I just saw it as a different point of view and had some causes close to my thinking
Name one (or more) things you like about the PSA Youth network
they seem really helpful and easy to communicate with if needed
What is your vision for youth in the PSA?
helping younger people become more comfortable and vocal in the union so are better prepared to become leaders in the future
How about when you aren't at work? What else do you like to do with your time?
Family, i try to attend the playcentre where my wife and children attend when i can and volunteer on the kinder garden committee as often as work allows so that keeps we busy. i like to watch our local rugby team GO THE MIGHTY SOUTHERN SHARKS! or just play on my Xbox if time allows ( but that's really not too often now)
What are your three favourite foods?
Rib Eye steak, Pork roast and vegetarian pizza
What are your three loves?
Whanau, Taranaki and just sport in general
What are your three pet peeves?
Slow internet connections grrrr, Really old school views on relationships, race and job suitability, oh and the Facebook game invitations
What advice would you give your 18year old self?
Dont be so caught up on what other people think you should do, and go to the gym NOW.
Anything else you would like to add?
There is a stigma with a lot of people that a person working at a meat works is just a dumb druggy/drinker and i thought so as well . But working along side them you will find most are really genuine,kind and helpful people not looking for a handout they just want to create better futures for themselves and there family's. And isn't that what we all want?
