Susannah does union stuff in Hong Kong!
Report from PSA Youth organiser Susannah Bailey
I was very lucky to receive a last minute invite to attend the Asia Pacific Young Workers Organising Summit in Hong Kong at the end of May, sponsored by the HKCTU and IUF. The summit was all about organising young workers.
The conference was an amazing opportunity to connect with other young unionists from across Asia and the Pacific - to share stories, ideas and collaborate on activities. Unionists from other countries were keen to hear what we’re up to with PSA Youth and the NZ Stand Up Youth Movement. I came back with loads of fabulous connections and ideas on activities and different ways of organising unions to make them more attractive and engaging for young workers.
The conference also put some of our own (important) struggles in perspective. Take a moment to imagine the struggles of workers in Asia. One of my conference roomies from Mainland China works for an NGO on workplace disease – particularly pollutants that are killing many workers in Chinese factories. Many of her friends and colleagues are in prison for attempting to organise and uphold workers’ rights.
I’ve shared some of the stories and ideas with the PSAY convenor team, and will also be sharing with the NZ Stand Up Committee, union staff and members. More to come!
