Pay Equity at the Oscars
The PSA Worth 100% campaign was echoed at the Oscars.
“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States of America.”
- Patricia Arquette
Pay equity claim in bargaining at Ministry of Social Development
There are nearly 2500 PSA members at Child, Youth and Family (CYF), part of the Ministry of Social Development. CYF National delegates are discussing a pay equity claim for their upcoming collective bargaining.
Like Kristine Bartlett, CYF social workers are mainly women, and their job is undervalued and underpaid because of this.
This claim will help to broaden the pay equity issue — to show that it isn't just minimum wage jobs that are undervalued, but all work traditionally done by women.
Update on the Kristine Bartlett v TerraNova case
The equal pay case is now back in the Employment Court. The PSA’s pay equity advisor Lisa Heap is supporting Kristine and her union, the SFWU, in this landmark case. We are able to draw on Lisa’s experience in winning equal pay cases in Australia and setting the equal pay principles in Queensland.
Talking to employers about pay equity
In order to inform public service and state sector employers of the implications for them of the TerraNova case, we are co-hosting a session on pay equity for them.
The EEO Commissioner Jackie Blue has agreed to co-host the meeting with us, on April 16, and she will speak alongside Lisa Heap on what employers need to know and should be doing.
