Report shows public sector skills must be valued more

The Public Service Association (PSA) has welcomed the release of a Productivity Commission report that recommends placing more value on the skills of regulatory staff.
The Productivity Commission’s report on regulatory institutions and practices, is an in-depth look at New Zealand’s regulatory systems and how they can be more efficient and effective.
Richard Wagstaff, PSA National Secretary, said “The constant push for flexibility from public servants has reduced specialist skills in regulatory agencies,”
“The PSA supports the Productivity Commission’s recommendation that Treasury and the SSC need to provide greater support for training and qualifications for staff.
“The report also notes the huge impact that constant restructuring has had on the smooth operation of regulatory functions.
“Areas including employment, and health and safety, are reliant on effective regulation to ensure New Zealanders are able to participate in the workforce without fear.
“Repeated restructuring and an overly politicised regulatory regime are making it harder for public servants to do their jobs.
“This report is a welcome contribution, and we look forward to working with Government to act on its findings,” said Richard Wagstaff.
