Strong support for School Strike for Climate from PSA
PSA 13 Mar 2019
Widespread support being given to the School Strike for Climate now includes support from the Public Service Association (PSA), New Zealand’s largest union, and its Eco Network.
“We applaud the students who are standing up for climate action and organising and attending the rallies being held around New Zealand - and the world - this Friday (15 March),” says Susannah Bailey, PSA Eco Network organiser.
“School students have every right to call our decision-makers to account by striking for a safe climate. We encourage the grassroots growth of democratic and citizen action to stand up for action on climate change for future generations.
“The clock on the very limited time we have to act to avoid irreversible, catastrophic climate breakdown is ticking faster and faster.
“In Jacinda Ardern, we have a Prime Minister who has identified climate change as her generation’s ‘nuclear free moment’ and the urgency that that statement implies is particularly relevant to the students who will be taking to the streets on Friday.
“We recognise our role as a union in pushing for faster action on climate change. Climate change impacts our members’ work and workplaces, and we know that work practices also impact the climate. We are one of a number of unions in Aotearoa NZ who support a just transition for workers to a low emission economy.
“The message of Sweden’s Greta Thunberg that ‘grown-ups have failed us’ has been resonating around the world and we at the PSA support young people and citizens of Aotearoa in taking strong action this week.”
