The Corrections delegate says she finally understood why we need pay equity when she read a report commissioned by the PSA on the feminisation and segregation of the clerical workforce.

“Finding out that historically women were paid less because of our gender was an eye-opener.  That for hundreds of years that perceived ‘women’s work’ has been considered of lower value and therefore paid less.

“To be honest, when I first read the report I was quite angry. I thought about my upbringing as a woman. But then I realised that was how our society was at that time, and that while you can’t change the past, you can influence and change the future.”  

At Corrections, the clerical and administration workforce is predominantly female. In 2019 the collective agreement for prisons recognised administration workers with an almost 10% cumulative increase over two years.

“It was a big step towards making things right.  A huge recognition for admin workers by all union members and the department,” Dallas says.

Corrections also has a Gender Pay Gap Action Plan for 2020-21 which focusses on equal pay, flexible working by default, reducing bias and leadership diversity. 

“While there is more work to do, I look forward to the day when women workers can say, in any work area, we are now worth 100% .’’
