Growth Specialist

The PSA has a permanent, fulltime vacancy, preferably based in Auckland (but Hamilton could be considered) for a growth specialist in our geographically-spread Growth Team

The PSA, Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi, is the largest union in New Zealand and is an innovative and dynamic organisation employing about 200 staff. We have over 80,000 members working in central and local government, health and community services.  The focus of the PSA is to advance the rights and working conditions of our members.

The growth specialist’s role is to undertake growth initiatives to unionise workforces within the various sectors of PSA membership.

We need an enthusiastic person, preferably with a union background, who can have compelling organising conversations. They need to understand and be committed to trade unionism.  An ability to promote the value of unionism and to customise that to create good recruitment outcomes is important.

Previous experience in membership recruitment, promotional or sales positions could have given the person the right skills for this position. Being adaptable, a quick thinker and well informed are also necessary attributes.

The main tasks are to work alongside union organisers and delegates to create growth plans that are linked to the PSA’s organising strategies, and to play a role in implementing them by connecting with potential members via phone, online meetings and at worksites. Educating delegates and members on how to have effective conversations that unionise their colleagues. Group presentations are also an important part of the role.

The successful candidate will be a team player and will be able to work well with our industrial staff (organisers) in supporting recruitment programmes in organisations across all of our sectors.

Applicants need to portray a positive representation of the PSA and our values at all times.

Applicants also need to negotiate access to worksites and will need to work with local PSA delegates in approaching potential members at their place of work.

Appropriate training will be provided. Some travel is required. A driver licence, or progress towards obtaining one, is required

The salary range for this position is $67,036 to $83,751. New employees enter the range on a starting rate based upon previous relevant experience and commensurate with internal relativities. Progression to the top of the scale is by regular and automatic service steps.
