National Sector Leader – Fixed Term

The PSA, Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi, has an 8-month fixed term, full time National Sector Leader position available in our Wellington office. The fixed term appointment commences on 17 February 2025 and concludes on 10 October 2025.
We are looking for someone with union leadership skills, and comprehensive experience as a union organiser or equivalent is critical.
The core purpose of the National Sector Leader role is:
- To provide leadership, guidance and direction on all aspects of organising, including bargaining and prioritisation. This includes providing mentoring, collegial and professional support to organising teams and organisers.
- To provide industrial leadership, to assist sector-based organising teams to work with delegate and bargaining teams to achieve organising objectives and to work with sector committees to develop organising strategies consistent with the union’s strategic plan.

The salary range for this position is $114,682 to $125,636. New employees enter the range on a starting rate based upon previous relevant experience and commensurate with internal relativities. Progression to the top of the scale is by regular and automatic service steps.

Organising Administrator (Part-time)

We are looking for a part-time, 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours per week) organising administrator to support our industrially focused organising staff based in our Nelson office. There is flexibility around the hours of work but the incumbant must be located in the Nelson region.
This is a fast-paced, challenging role where you will provide organising support to the assistant secretaries, NSLs (National Sector, Support, Strategic and Māori Leaders), organisers, delegates and members. This includes mail outs, ballot administration, travel bookings and general administration duties.
We need someone with a good skill base and broad administrative experience who can plan, prioritise and work to deadlines, has sound computer literacy, can collect and process information, is approachable and customer-focused, has good written and verbal communication skills, and a good eye for detail.
The salary range for this position is $78,175 to $96,428 prorated. New employees enter the range on a starting rate based upon previous relevant experience and commensurate with internal relativities. Progression to the top of the scale is by regular and automatic service steps.

Economist and Policy Advisor
Full-time position for New Zealand’s largest union

Our 7-member policy team operates at a senior level within the PSA, providing insights to inform our strategy and developing policy to support New Zealand’s biggest union. We’re looking to complement existing skills in the team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in economic modelling and quantitative data analysis skills. This is a great opportunity to make your mark in an influential national organisation and showcase your economic and analytical expertise. Team members represent the PSA in a wide range of external forums. They provide analysis and policy papers to the executive board and our leadership team. They also advise and support the organising staff and keep the PSA aware of trends and emerging issues that impact on our members.
